Introduction to Pinterest

On the surface, Pinterest may appear just like another photo sharing site, but in reality it is much more. Pinterest is a virtual pin board (scrapbook) which allows users to bookmark things they want to among the tons of varied images across categories. Pinterest connects you all with images that are beautiful and interesting.

But friends, Pinterest isn’t quite like Flicker or Instagram! It’s not Facebook or Twitter either, but connects to both. So how does one get started with Pinterest and what are the other features it offers? Let’s explore.

  • Pinterest is currently in its Beta phase; hence it is still an invite-only platform. The first thing you need to do is request an invite because you need an invite to join Pinterest. Remember, you can ask for an invite on our Facebook page for the same. Once you get it, you can create your account and get into the system. Add a ‘Pin it’ button to your browser as shown below-

  • Now you can pin anything that has an image on any website and add it to one of your pinboards. And it linkbacks to the site where the image is from.
  • You can categorize and search pictures based on colors. So if you have categorized as ‘red and blue’ images, then all red and blue images will pop up in your search.
  • If you want to add a picture to your board (from any website), all you need to do is click on the picture, Re-Pin it or simply ‘like’ it, and post a comment on the picture. It is a great idea to ‘fit’ it or ‘share’ images.
  • You can also add a title or change an existing one (or retain if you like the existing one). You can tag it and it will be pinned successfully to the same color board in your Pin Board.
  • Once you have pinned your favorite images, you can revisit them whenever you wish to. In the future if you are looking for ‘inspiration’ the categorization you did will be really helpful. For example if you do a blog on say apples, you can flip through and find inspirations through those pictures. It’s a great tool to mark your inspiration. So if you want to grab a pin from a particular website, simply type the name of the site. It will display pictures of the entire website and you can grab and start pinning those.
  • You can slot images on the basis of category. If you want a new category, simply enter that name. After creating the category, give a tag to your pin.
  • Select the Everything option which has different categories and a huge range of image options.
  • You can also pick different Pinterest users you want to follow. You can find friends if you go up to people can invite friends and also track who follows you. You can invite your friends by email through so that they can join you and have fun. Or you can find your friends who already have a Pinterest account and you might want to follow. You can find out who has an account and who doesn’t.
